Peoples Gas hosts Winter Resource Fair to help Chicagoans with heating bills

Utility encourages customers to sign up for Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) and Share the Warmth

CHICAGO – U.S. Representative Bobby Rush (1st District) joined Peoples Gas and Community and Economic Development Association (CEDA) to host the 14th annual Winter Resource Fair at Gary Comer Youth Center, at 7200 S. Ingleside Ave., on the city’s south side.

“I am glad this important event was able to provide Chicagoland residents with information and critical resources ─ ranging from financial assistance to social services support. It is important that people know there are resources and agencies that will help ease their concerns,” Rush said.

Attendees received one-on-one consultations with Peoples Gas and nearly 15 local vendors, including CEDA and ComEd, who provided information on energy and financial assistance. Several city, state and human services agencies also were present to assist customers with other available resources.

“We understand it can be hard for our customers to keep up with their natural gas bill,” said Larry Szumski, vice president – customer relations, Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas. “We have several energy assistance options to help, including our Share the Warmth program, which no longer requires eligible customers to make a matching payment.”

Peoples Gas offered information and enrolled customers for energy efficiency rebates and programs, including Home Energy Jumpstart, which provides free, energy-saving products such as programmable thermostats, showerheads, faucet aerators, pipe insulation, compact fluorescent light bulbs and smart power strips.

Through the federally funded LIHEAP program, customers receive help toward their energy bills. The Peoples Gas Share the Warmth program provides grants of up to $200 to qualifying customers for their natural gas bills.

Both LIHEAP and Share the Warmth are administered in Cook County by CEDA.

Peoples Gas customers who were unable to attend the Winter Resource Fair can visit, or call CEDA’s hotline at 800-571-CEDA (2332) to find the location of the closest LIHEAP application site and for more information.
