Peoples Gas Energy Efficiency Squad brings Earth Week Surprises to Chicago customers
Company partners with community groups to deliver $1,000 in gift cards and energy-saving products to deserving customers
CHICAGO – The Peoples Gas Energy Efficiency Squad brought Earth Week Surprises to four customers on Friday, April 19. Earth Day is a global day that recognizes the importance of environmental protection and falls on Monday, April 22, this year. In its third year, Earth Week Surprises helps celebrate the occasion.
Arriving in the Peoples Gas command van, the company’s revelers surprised the customers at their homes in “Publishers Clearing House” fashion. Each customer received a large check for $500 and a basket filled with energy-saving products, including a smart thermostat, showerheads, faucet aerators, pipe insulation and other eco-friendly products valued at an additional $500.
Peoples Gas joined forces with three local organizations: Spanish Coalition for Housing (SCH), Chicago Police Department – Office of Community Policing and Erie Neighborhood House.
“These surprises help us celebrate community members who make a major impact on our environment,” said Christina Pagnusat, director, energy efficiency and major accounts, Peoples Gas. “We are excited to not only brighten their days, but to enable them to save more money and energy long term.”
The customers that were selected to receive an Earth Week Surprise are leaders who embody the spirit of caring for our communities—they positively contribute to their neighborhoods and the neighborhood groups they support.
Diana Graham has been a long-term resident of the Austin community for more than 30 years. She is currently the president of the North Lotus block club and the 15th district Senior Committee. She was selected by Chicago Police Department – Office of Community Policing for her reputation for putting her community first.
La Quinta Horne-Phillips serves as the chairperson of the 15th district Police Explorers, a career exploration and mentoring program for youth. She also was referred for the Earth Week Surprise by Chicago Police Department – Office of Community Policing. Horne-Phillips constantly helps to prepare community service projects, arrange field trips and plan fundraising activities.
Laura Campa serves on the board of directors for Chicago’s Oncology Nursing Society. She participates in community outreach that fosters opportunities for their members to interact, educate and support cancer patients and their families throughout the area. Campa is an advocate for many.She was referred by Spanish Coalition for Housing.
Maria Herrera is public health coordinator at Enlace—she oversees community gardens in Little Village. She is a former nurse who is passionate about educating the community about health, nutrition and gardening. Herrera is an American Heart Association award recipient—they recognized her for the commitment to improving health in her community. She was referred by Erie Neighborhood House.
The Energy Efficiency Squad will arrange to have energy-efficient products installed in each customer’s home through Home Energy Jumpstart, leaving them well prepared to start saving money on their energy bills. The squad also will educate each customer about available Home Energy Rebates for qualifying high-efficiency products and energy-saving services.
